Social Workers

I filmed a series of interviews for the Children’s Social Work Matters website back in May 2015. While doing some work for them recently I spotted that the videos have been made public.

This was one of the first times I filmed in Log using the JVC LS300 which gives the HDR (high dynamic range) low contrast look that these videos have.

Unholy Trinity!

My client – UMPF, asked me to film their PhotoBoo event this weekend at the Trinity Leeds Shopping Centre.

On the Saturday I installed a GoPro and Radio Mic inside the booth while also filming from outside. Then on Sunday I edited the video which went live in time for Halloween on Tuesday:

Apart from this 60 second version there’s also a full 2m 30s second edit:

Ain’t it Grand

I’ve recently produced six promotional videos for the Grand Hotel in York – Yorkshire’s only 5 star hotel.
Sam Pointon was originally given the post of ‘Director of Fun & Families’ by the National Railway Museum in York. He’s revisited his post by offering advice to families looking for fun days out in York this summer.

As a one man crew I had to keep kit to a minimum.

I used the JVC LS300 as the main camera, and my new Panasonic G80 for the second angle mounted on it’s new Carbon Fibre monopod. The Panasonic matched really nicely with the JVC.

A Kind of Magic

Tom and myself recently filmed a pair of performances of ‘The Magic Paintbrush’ performed by schools in West Yorkshire. Professional performers and a small orchestra were joined by children from different schools in the regions.

We filmed on three cameras and then I edited the performances for upload to YouTube.

Best of British

Here’s something I made recently, filmed at the Glen Dimplex Home Appliances factory in Liverpool.

I did quick recce and the client’s only real concern was that we had to keep disruption to a minimum.

The production line switched to making our specific colour and design when we needed to start filming, and we only had the parts to produce five of our ovens, so I had to film it as fast as I could.

There was some daylight in the factory as well as fluorescents and some other discharge lighting. But the strong key lighting in the video is from a 1.25kw and a 2.5kw Arri MSR.

I filmed it all using my trusty Hague Multi-Jib on a Heavy Duty Manfrotto tripod, and that’s on a Vinten tripod dolly so I can wheel it around the location on my own if I need to.

The clients were watching my 22 inch location monitor via wireless HDMI.

In FCPX I used the ‘Epic’ look from Luster Grade on an adjustment layer. And I’ve done a few colour corrections under the adjustment layer to balance between shots.

Still Life Leeds

I filmed my first Mannequin Challenge today at the Trinity Shopping Centre. The challenge took place in Trinity Kitchen, the restaurant venue. I used my new gimbal for the first time and filmed using my Sony a6000 with Tom kindly carrying round a softlight on a monopole. The gimbal helps level the camera and makes everything really smooth while the operator walks around.

Gimbal on white

I had a quick walkthrough, allowing me to see where some people were going to be and to get them posed properly for the camera, but most of it I hadn’t seen when it came to the big moment. I missed the lady in the Photo Booth the first time so I did another short clip of her section and seamlessly spliced that back in.

After the filming, I edited the video onsite and the client uploaded it to their Social Media channels.

The Yorkshire Evening Post featured the event too.

I also wore a body mounted GoPro on another gimbal which I used to capture the event behind the camera.
You can see my POV in this video, and hear me count down to the final ‘hurray’.

Faith Through a Lens 2016

I’ve just completed the editing for this year’s Faith Through a Lens Award. As usual I filmed and edited two VTs which are shown to the audience at the live event which I filmed with Tom. This is likely to be the last year that the awards are hosted by the BBC as the Religion Dept. is moving to Scotland.

Beacon Medaes

I’ve just completed another shoot and edit for Beacon Medaes, the world’s leading manufacturer of medical gas manifolds and compressors.
Like the previous job, I did the voiceover on this video too!
